Community Partnership in the Dominican Republic

We believe in the power of communities and the strength of working together. As part of our direct programming, we have begun a community development partnership in the Dominican Republic, collaborating with local leaders in the village of Pueblo Nuevo to empower community members as agents of change.

Pueblo Nuevo Community Center: In Spring of 2018, we opened our doors to the Pueblo Nuevo Community Center! It started as a vacant house, overgrown with shrubs, cobwebs, and scattered trash. Resident volunteers from all walks of life came together to make it what it is now – a beautiful, dynamic space that is open and welcoming to all. Students come during after school hours to use free internet to complete their homework. Small children play with age appropriate toys and read storybooks. Residents of all ages come with buckets to fill up at the community water station. The community gathers for meetings of all kinds. They’ve created a young adult group, naming themselves the “Ventajones” or “twenty somethings.” These young adults lead a youth group, working with teens to promote healthy activities and build positive peer support. Community leaders come together in the Junta de Vecinos to advocate for the priorities of the community. This center is a symbol of connecting community and creating change. We are thrilled to be on this journey with Pueblo Nuevo!
