Feed Branford Kids: In Action
The Feed Branford Kids program launched late last year. It was inspired by staggering statistics demonstrating that in Connecticut, one of the wealthiest states in the nation, nearly one in five children under age 18 is hungry or food insecure. This figure accounts for approximately 155,000 children statewide. Locally, nearly one in four children in Branford who count on free or reduced meals during the school day often goes hungry on the weekends.
Feed Branford Kids, which is in partnership with the Branford Public Schools, provides kids in need with backpacks filled with non-perishable, kid-friendly foods that can be consumed during the weekend. The goal is to fill the weekend hunger gap that too often exists for developing children in Connecticut and across the United States.
We checked in with Wendy Cowles, the President of the Branford Food Pantry to see how the Feed Branford Kids Program is growing. And we’re happy to report that things are going well! One of the volunteer’s brothers has donated two rooms to house the Feed Branford Kids operation which quickly outgrew the space at the Branford Food Pantry. One room is used to store supplies. In the other space, volunteers pack bags for distribution to five schools and other venues in Branford, which they deliver each Friday.
The Branford community has been whole heartedly supporting this effort with generous donations. For any supplemental supplies needed, the all-volunteer crew works with the Connecticut Food Bank to purchase items at a discounted cost. Loyal volunteers then travel to Fairfield each week to pick up the supplies and have them ready for the Friday drop off.
At this time, 65 Branford children are being served by this program and it’s continuing to grow!
My family and I are very pleased to support Feed Branford Kids and the families in the Branford community! If you’d like to make a donation to this important effort, please contact the Branford Food Pantry: http://www.branfordfoodpantry.org/.
