Anna Balakrishnan


Anna joined the team in August 2017 as Foundation Director. Anna received a Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University in 2016, with a concentration in International Social Welfare and Services to Immigrants and Refugees. In 2014, she graduated from University of Connecticut with a B.A. in Human Development and Family Studies.

With a passion for working with international communities, she has worked extensively in the Dominican Republic, working alongside local advisory committees and youth groups in a wide variety of community development projects. In 2013, she cofounded Project Corazon, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to youth empowerment and community organizing within the village of Pueblo Nuevo. Through her work in the DR, by way of assessment, relationship building, community organizing, and leadership development, she has worked closely with local leaders to empower community members to have an active role in the betterment of their community.

As a bilingual social worker in NYC, she worked with children involved in the Child Welfare System and with families from a wide variety of backgrounds, providing social emotional support and helping families navigate multiple barriers to access to education. Anna deeply believes in the lifelong learning of the many cultural, socioeconomic, political, and other contexts in which individuals and communities live and grow.
